Sandra + Alex - Wedding in Germany

"Following German Traditions" - part 1

Sandra and Alex started their wedding celebrations the day before their civil marriage with an activity called Polterabend. Guests break porcelain and ceramics (that they carry themselves for the occasion) to bring good luck to the couple. Stoneware, flowerpots, tiles, dishes, cups, even sinks were included. Some people collect all their chipped and broken ceramics and dishes throughout the year to bring to this type of event.

The couple has to take care of the clean up afterwords, symbolising that they will have to work together through difficulties in their new life. There is no guest list (word of mouth does the work) and to start or end time. Everybody is pretty much welcomed, another symbolic act "friends and family are always welcome in our home, even when they are not expected and no matter what mess they leave behind".

They received gifts, but was no easy task to open some of them.

Sandra plays with a band in her town and they prepared a small performance for the event.

  2. It was great to know about this unique tradition of breaking the ceramics. The pictures from the wedding are amazing, and the venue is absolutely beautiful. Seems like it was quite an awesome event overall. My cousin’s wedding is next week at one of the popular venues in Chicago, and I hope that it will also be a wonderful and memorable event.
